Chatbots for mental health need real guardrails

I am a social worker in Bengaluru and I have spent the last year doing outreach around mental health in colleges. Students talk to me about the AI companions and chatbots they use, and my feelings are mixed but tilted toward caution. For a student who cannot afford a therapist and who is afraid of stigma, a chatbot at two in the morning is not nothing. Several students have told me it helped them get through a hard night. What concerns me is the lack of clarity about what these tools are and are not. Some market themselves as companions, some as coaches, some gesture at being therapists without the credentialing that word should imply. When a student in crisis interacts with one of these systems, the handoff to a human, to a helpline, to a hospital, is the part that matters, and it is the part that is most variable. I would like our regulators to work with mental health professionals to set a clear floor: crisis escalation that actually works, honest disclosure that the system is not a licensed clinician, age-appropriate design for younger users, and audits. I am not asking to ban these tools. I am asking that we not let the most vulnerable users find out the hard way that the safety behaviors are uneven. The cost of getting this wrong is not a bad review. It is a life.
